I have white sand in my tank and I am noticing that it is getting pretty dirty, with tiny uneatin food particles ( NLS pellet crumbs ). I have vacumed the sand at water change time, but I am wondering if there is another solution. Unlike my Peacock/Hap tank, which is like a blender with all the fish movement and circ pumps, the water in my Front tank is quite still. I thought about introducing a group of Synodontis to eat up the crumbs from the messy eating Fronts. I also thought about adding a circ pump on a timer and running it 10 mn a few times per day. I beleive Fronts do not like current, so I am a bit hesitant to do this. Any ideas?

I have heard of putting a pump to circulate the water at the bottom of the tank. I have white sand in a tank and it is a battle to keep it clean. I know I try to just suck right above the sand when I clean hoping to pull some of the stuff up off the bottom.

been having that problem in one of my sand tanks too. plus lots of floating particles. i think i'm gonna swap out one of my eheims for a AC110 to take care of the floating debris. the sand is a bit of a lost cause i think. more water changes to keep it looking pretty i guess.

Try a bushy nose plec (algae eater I know) or some other detritus feeders. Its a problem we all have I think. Worse with black sand I reckon and worse when you feed NLS (which I do).
Maybe we need poop coloured sand.

i know this is a really old thread. just moved back from overseas & getting back into the hobby. excited!

anyway, with respect to accumulating detritus, my best luck has been a combination of wave pumps and poret foam. i use a stack of poret foam in my sump; it starts with large holes (10ppi) and goes down to 45. that gets the water clear. i aim the wave pumps toward the bottom and set them to surge every 30 seconds or so. sometimes, i have to adjust the aim, but in the end, i get really cool sand dunes & very clean sand. the wave pumps keep the crap in the water column & the poret foam gets it all out.
