Has anyone ever had their holding females put air in their mouths along with the eggs?

I'm pretty sure this is what was happening to my last holder. Every now and then her mouth would look way bigger and her body was floating upwards and she'd to swim downward to stay down.

It seems like one of my other females did this once too, but I'm not sure.

Just wondering if anyone else had seen this.

I was kind of freaked by her activity, so I stripped her at day 8 and got 21 eggs with body just starting to show. 1 is damaged with a dent in the side of the egg, so I put it in a separate strainer to see if it's fully gone, or if it will still survive.

Is this your 5th or 6th spawn with this colony in the last few months? Breeding fools you have there!! Congrats. Never has a female with eggs and air. Sounds a bit crazy.

Haha, I know man! They're breeding like crazy. I looked in today and saw 2, possibly 3 tubes protruding a little bit...so I may be in for alot more fry, which is awesome. I have people wanting a combined total of 140 fry, and I only have 45 right now with 21 growing out...so I need all the fry I can get right now!

Yea, I'm not sure what that female was doing...I was a little worried though. So I figured I'd strip her early to be safe.

Marc

Big Jim is that because the air gives them the feeling of the eggs so they think being there?

We just use one of our fry bins. We place a rock in the bottom and sink it to the bottom of the tank. Add the lid and you have your own fish jail. The fry bin I use for this is a 15 to 20 gallon bin.

Big Jim, where do you get these fry bins? Is there anyone selling these online? I haven't seen any around.

We got the bins from Walmart. We carefully cut holes on the side. Then silicone a window screen over the holes on the side. This allows water flow to go through the bin. I like to place the bin in-front of a filter for water flow.

Now I understand what you are doing. I kept thinking the bins I have don't have holes. I wasn't sure how you got water flow once you put the lid on. All your doing is a house with screen windows!!

Big Jim do you use these fry bins for your young and keep them in the main tank allowing them to grow out a bit before moving to another tank? If so this would do away with a bunch of ten gallon tanks. How do you feed them, is the bin floating even with the holes?

Ahh, this makes more sense now...I've been looking all over the web for good size bins with holes already in them, lol.
