So I think some of my large females are getting too old to breed well. They won't hold very long and the eggs I do pull from them are almost always bad...sometimes a few survive. My little females breed like champs with the same alpha. So I don't think it's his milt...maybe the old ones are scooping them up before they can be fertitlized? Maybe their eggs are duds? Any one ever had this problem with larger females?

Yes, sometimes the male does not like the females for whatever reason. Or simply the female does not like the male. Put the females with no success in with another male and see if something changes.

They have spawned very well for me before with the same alpha. The problem is I don't have another large tank to the different male deal...wish I did! Iandraco - It's hard to say...they're wild and they were from importers who used them for breeding for a little while as well...so I really have no idea.

I've had my larger females for 2-3 years.

That sucks I know the fry I got from you were amazing and I'm sure they were from one of those females. To bad you didn't have another tank to try out another male.

Thanks Malone191! It's unfortunate, but I knew eventually some would grow out of breeding age. I have 9 females, so there are still several that breed very well for me...and I'll be getting some new younger females soon as well...so it's not too big of a deal.

Seems you have some "heifers" that are getting to old or they have lost their lust for your alpha male. I wished you had another tank to put them with a new male and see what happens. If they are getting to the point of not breeding they would be a great addition to anyones group who want to have a nice quality fish to show and just enjoy. Hope you find a nice home for them if that is the plan.
