Hi to all in this forum!! I am new here and sort of new to Frontosa. I had them a couple of years ago but got a nasty disease from my lfs and not knowing transferred it to all my tanks and it wiped out everything. Its been a year and a half and I have decided to try again. I am in the process of developing a colony of Mpwimbe in a 125 gal tank. Yes I plan on going bigger!!! I found this guy on craigslist and he is local so no shipping but what is he? I would like to be sure before I decide to bring him home. I have two burundi I know them!!! I love this site and I know I am gonna learn a ton of stuff from all of you. I hope I am doing this right!! LOL

Not sure about that one. Looks Burundi type shape but face mask is not right. Possible hybrid or just an unusual mask.

I'm getting more pictures Monday. I don't want a hybrid. I'm getting F1 mpimbwes. I wanted to be sure before getting him.

The mask and facial coloring appears to be Tanzanian (Mpimbwe)...but the hump and the rest of the body's coloring makes me think Burundi...a clear pic from the side with a good view of the mask and fins should help a lot.

Thanks for the replies. I passed on the deal. Guess I'm still in need of a male. Gonna look for a much smaller one this way he can grow out with all the others.

Hi All,
This is a selection of my Frontosa I have had for about 12 months now.
I wondered if anyone could help ID them for me please?
My alpha male is breeding with 2 of the females and I have now had 3 broods from them. The first brood was released in to my main holding tank after the female held full term and unfortunately I only managed to save 2 of the fry. The second time I noticed a female holding I stripped her at approx. 21 days and got 10 fry and on Sunday I witnessed a spawning which she is still holding and plan to strip her of and tumble in the next few days.
Any help/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks CCT,
The female in pic 4 is the one that is holding at the moment. I am going to strip her tonight and tumble the eggs. She spawned 5 days ago and took around 25 eggs in but is looking a fair bit smaller around her face than on sunday so she may have swallowed already. We'll see later.

you have a bit of a mixing pot here. pic 1 has me stumped due to the fin color being pale. my guess would be hybrid but i could be wrong. second appears to be a Zaire variant. third is a Kigoma 7 stripe, 4 Burundi, 5 appears to be Tanzanian variant to me. fry produced amongst these fish would be hybrids for sure, i'm sorry to say. selling offspring of these fish would probably be frowned upon, but if you are keeping them for yourself, no big deal. you would probably wind up with too many before you knew it. it would probably be best to pick your favorite variant and sell off the rest and use the money to fill out the group with one species. sorry to be the bearer of bad news. hope you don't think i'm being a jerk. i really am not trying to be. just my 2 cents.

My question is why are you mixing types? That's the number one no no in fish keeping. We keep our type and variation because of this rule amongst fish keepers. Personally, I agree with Ian, pick one type and sell the rest to fill the space, or enjoy your very own mix of frontosa if that's what you really want to do!
