I've had many varieties of African cichlids, have enjoyed keeping
, breeding, and even selling a few.. Just enough to pay for the hobby itself, food etc..

But I'm not sure that there is any African cichlid that is as graceful as the "frontosa".. I have three, not certain but think that they are of the Burundi persuasion.

Can anyone share if there is really much difference between the various varieties besides the obvious visual differences?

I have three, started with 6, for whatever reason I've lost one by one over about a year and a half. The last one that died, got stuck in a rock crevice, and I didn't find him in time. I know it's cruel to say, but I'm wondering if they a bit less intelligent than some of my other fish..

Another thing that I noticed is a very obvious disproportionate growth rate between the Burundi that I have, which were identical when purchased, and now the smallest is one third of the biggest.? Do they possibly expel a horomone that along with dominance actually slows growth and metabolism of the others?

Even they seem a bit "slower" I still find these "front-giberos" very beautiful..

Would love to learn more about them, and even to buy more of them.. Would even consider selling mine to start another colony of 10 or so from scratch..

Cheers!

Size is what it is. Males will be (most cases) larger than the females. With that being said I have had females that are large like a male. I always tell people find a frontosa that you like, meaning eye appeal. If you like the look then raise that variant. Look at the album in this forum. It has pictures of adult frontosa. Find one you like and get a colony and enjoy. Remember a 6 foot plus foot print size tank is what is needed. You may have lost the three you had to being in a small tank. The one that got stuck in a rock may have been trying to get away from another as the pecking order was being established. Just a thought.
