In my case, there is clearly a large difference between my old tap water (100 miles away) and here, The water here comes out of the tap very cloudy. I'm going to be contacting the water company, and also take a water sample to wetspot since I am sure their test kit is better than mine. My past water could be used without conditioner without any visible affects. I used it anyways, although I am sure I forgot a few times. So basically due to great water I got out of my strict habbit of Always adding conditioner. My wife said the water tastes funny when we first moved in here. So who knows, maybe they are poisoning us

The cloudiness is the lime(?) or calcium they add to the water at the treatment plant to harden it....its to stop he water from eroding the pipes.

Something like that anyway,lol

Is there not a website from your water company that gives you the readings of tapwater in your area?
It should give you chlorine/chloramine/nitrite/ammonia nitrate etc

Yes but when all fish die, or when most fish die, then it has to be something major.

I've lost too many fronts with 50% WC.
Again sorry for losses guys.

It could be one of those you mention.
But one thing to remember every fish is different, some can handle the big changes some are not.[/quote]

Any way you slice it, that's a tough hit to take. Sorry for the loss!

Why are people losing fish with 50% water change?

poison in the water?

Ph or TDS shock from not matching the new water?

Not aging the water? (too much dissolve oxygen)

Not putting dechlorinator?

What is the main reason? Is it that water companies so often put dangerous stuff in the water?

there is very little reason to do a 50% water change.
i had talked about this in earlier portion of the thread.

If you don't overstock, and if you over filter then you have no reason for doing a huge water change, zero.
discus breeders like to do huge water changes, but they tend to use RO water, so if that instance it is fine.
can't really use RO water with frontosa, then you would have to add lake salts.
frontosa will not grow faster, breed better or look more colorful with 50% water change vs. 25% change.
there is no reason to do this for this fish, or most fish.

again, as stated in earlier portion of thread.
if the water company makes a big change in chemistry, your fish will pull through much easier if you do a small water change vs. a large water change.
so besides the fact that it would be less stressful if the water company made the change, the second point is there is simply zero reason to do a huge water change.

Slowly starting to build up my Hypancistrus species again.
I will get more Zebra, but they are easily found, and the price is dropping fairly quickly, so not too much of a hurry to get the Zebra up again.

I got a adult male queen coming, and 2 queen fry.
Also by luck i have found a adult L174 (my holy grail of hypancistrus).

Add that to some recently received 400's and 411, its building up again.

Congrats on getting the #174, you just find one or breeders. Also congrats on the Queens they are one of my favorites. Once you get them settled in take some pics.
