I was kinda running out the door with that last post, sorry if it seemed a bit Agro, it's just that individual had said some other things that were less than constructive, and then apparently decided I am lying about a heater malfunction.

In other news, I have talked to the store about getting more of these Flora Heckels, and am standing by for word. One of the serious breeders on the discus forum said simply put that discus like mine don't exist in the US. Heckel Crosses are around, but apparently the level of refinement on mine has dropped some jaws. Perhaps the disgruntled responses I am getting are just envious people. As the saying goes "Pics don't do this fish justice". But that won't stop me from trying. Look forward to more pics in the near future :)

There is no call to be rude on a forum. I always look at it as a place to get information to help in the hobby. A place where you can get several ideas on how others handle issues. To be a jerk and call someone out as not knowing is not the kind of thing that's needed on a forum. The only thing I know about discus and it is most likely not true is they are temperamental and you have to watch your parameters. A heater can do a lot of things in a short peroid of time. :(

Thanks JRD. Usually I can deal with people like that, but I just lost some really nice fish and to have someone basically call me a liar was a bit too much.

Yes, discus are a bit tricky, but I don't think so much as many would have you believe. The youngsters should have daily water changes (probably could get away with every other day) just to keep them growing well and healthy. Fry are a different story as they can eat very often so need multiple daily water changes. Adults are pretty much like Frontosa. Bi weekly or weekly water changes. I suspect where allot of discus people get in trouble is their prescribed 50% water changes. It's fine if you age your water but allot of people don't and then have troubles because of PH swings. IMHO accepting that many will not age water in barrels and then suggesting 10-20% daily changes is a much better way to go for adult fish (maybe even for youngsters). Took me all of a week of seeing my big fish mope after 50% water changes to figure that out. Alternatively using Cichlid buffer may solve this problem. Keeping a constant high of around 8 is better than fluctuations.

The heater company is getting a call from my wife tomorrow. Hopefully they will reimburse for the fish, but I am not holding my breathe. In the mean time I have put the call out for more of the Flora Heckels, and am saving my pennies since I plan to get 3 to put with mine in a big tank to try and get a pair. Mine was trying to spawn with a big albino when I found it, so it is definitely ready :)

Good luck getting them to pair up. I hope you can find more to buy. Heater company takes care of you besides "We can give you a new heater" you will be very lucky. I think raising fish no matter what they are there are laws that are the same. Water changes being one of them. I agree just use some common knowledge and you can make it work.

I have had a similar heater malfuntion before. Sorry for your loss. BTW, my foray into discus keeping 15 years ago revealed them to be quite a douschy group back then as well. Good luck.
