of course the power went out while i was at work this week. not sure how long it was out but it was long enough to kill most of my cyprichromis. only 3 females out of 13 fish survived it. having battery powered air pumps on hand doesn't help when you're not home to use them. i wonder if there is a way to hook up a generator that turns itself on in the event of a power outage. do you guys know if this is possible? this just adds to my bad luck streak. at least i didn't loose any fronts i guess.

First off, this sucks, and I know this pain too well. Sorry man.

As for backups I haven't looked into them in awhile, but I researched awhile back and basically the battery backup units for computers seemed to be the best bet. They basically look like a little computer tower, and there are different power level/time levels, but they match up pretty well with the typical need of our hobby. Of course the heaters are the most power hungry and this is what you need to keep in mind. Alternatively Azoo makes a little dual pump for about $50 last time I checked which runs off AC but switches to batteries automatically in the event of a power outage. You would need at least one of these per two or maybe 4 if you gang valve it tanks, so it could get pretty pricey soon. And finally, yes there are full on generators that kick on automatically, but they are pricey. Sorry I don't have time to do the re-research right now, but hopefully this is helpful.

Todd

Ian,

That stinks! Sorry bud!

I am thinking about creating an alarm system that wil send me a text or email if the water temp in my tanks goes below a certain level or above a certain level. I see no reason why I could not get a sensor for voltage/current flow.

I've been thinking about this for a while. Your situation just inspired me to start looking into it again.

Once again, sorry bud!

Russ

thanks guys. the oxygen pumps are what i really need to backup. if the heat drops a bit the fish should be able to handle it till i get home. no idea how long the power was out. less than 5 hours for sure but that was enough for the cyps to asphyxiate. mouths wide open on the bottom of the tank. had a calvus who was in bad shape too but i was able to revive him. power came back on about 20 mins after i got home fortunately. i'll admit that a lot of my problem was an overstocked tank. oxygen must have gone pretty quick. i should know better. live and learn i guess

I have a friend who has salt water tanks. He has some system that alerts him via his cell phone if some of the parameters go out of wack. I will have to ask what he has. He told me he could set my tank up but I didn't see the need. I think I do now!!

Still in Japan. It's easier to get here than get back.
I will be coming back soon though.

Yeah, we had a little one a couple years back, so it is a bit more complicated, ie we can't come back on a wing and a prayer, we need to save a bit of money. I spent the last year heavily investing in aerial filming gear, ie those things the media likes to scare everyone with called DRONES!! actually they are called multicopters, but calling them something that the military uses to kill helps push along legislation... another topic all together. Short version, we hope to be back late spring or early summer, and it is looking very doable.

I can't wait to have a tank or two or three or four full of fronts again

Did your brother sell all of your tanks or are they still around?

One tank with a Single Mikula and a single Christmas fulu were moved to my parents house, before my brother moved north. Last I heard these two were doing fine together. It is really hard to get information from my parents about things in general, but it sounds like my tanks are in my brothers storage unit nearby. I know the mpimbwe got wiped out, and a couple mikula died a couple years back, but I have no idea what happened to the rest. Pretty much I will have to start new though. Really hoping my tanks are still there when I get back. I am likely just coming back with Discus, and some Victorians likely has strains that are no where else in the world. I have been keeping tabs on places that seem to have old strains, but getting information about them is very difficult. I see Tanzanian and Burundi around here, but no zaires yet. Often Tanzanians are labeled as Blue Zaire though. I always try to correct them, but they never relabel. I think the stores don't know better, and paid more than they should, so they don't want to lower the price. I do know there are some Mikula here that came in about the same time as my original colony, and I may hunt them down and try to strike up a deal, but it wouldn't be till near leaving time, as I don't have the space here to grow them out.
