Ok so I fell in love with some black congo calvus the second I seen the little suckers at my lfs, but I don't think I can add them to my 60g with my already 3 inch fronts. Any tips for adding these beautiful fish? calvus are about 1 inch. Should I wait and pay the 75$ a fish at 4 inch or grow these out myself? If I was to grow them out what would be a suitable size tank to do so, I know they grow painfully slow. I've got to have these fish with my fronts one day I honestly can't stop thinking about them hahaha! Thanks again guys

Ah yes, you've caught the calvus bug. They are great with fronts. there are a few things to consider here. I know some will disagree with me on this. But I believe it would be okay to add them, so long as they are not so small that they will fit in your fronts mouths. there is still a big risk though. Your fronts can easily kill them if they want to. They really do grow extremely slow. I've had mine for roughly 2.5 years and the females are still under 2 inches. My fronts seem to have a strange respect for them and leave them alone though. However, I would not recommend adding them if you still have your mbuna. They would probably chase the calvus to death. The other problem you current have is your tank size. Given how fast your fronts are growing you really don't have space for any more fish in your 60. Your number 1 priority right now should be getting your 180 up and running before you add anything else. If you want to grow them out in another tank though I'd shoot for at least a 29. I grew mine out in a 40b for about a year before adding the larger males to my moba tank. Make sure your tank is fully cycled before adding any calvus. Calvus are pretty sensitive when they are small.

KnowingI wanted either Compressiceps or Calvus with my Mobas, I decided to add them early. My Mobas are about 1.5" and I was lucky enough to find 2" Comps. After a bit of an acclimation period, all fish hang together with the Mobas ignoring the Comps and vis versa. IMO add the Calvus when all fish are young. Once those Fronts get big, they wont appreciate the company. Its rard to believe looking at them, but Fronts are a serious predator. Look for a breeder with 3" fish. Mukesh, at Rarefishusa has 2-3" Black Calvus for $34.00

Ok thanks guys. I know fronts look so gentle lol! But at the lfs they have the biggest damn front I've ever seen and u can tell that fish doesn't mess around. I've seen just how large their mouth can get its amazing! I might have to take a pic and post it for u guys he's one amazing specimen. You can tell he's a hunter that's for sure.

As for the mbuna, I gave the yellow mbuna to my friend who has a large mbuna tank, and I constantly get updates on the little guy so that worked out great.

I'll give it a whole weeks thought on if I want to add some now or wait. I'm leaning towards wait. But I do have a tonne of cichlid stones I could use I'm not really worried about them dieing, I just not sure if I want to keep other fish with my fronts, I've made that mistake before and had no where to give the fish once I realized I wanted only fronts. I'll keep u guys posted. And I'm definitely going to check that site. Do calvus ship well?

As long as the shipper knows what they are doing and packs them right and ships them quickly they do fine. I ordered 10 calvus and 5 comps with 2 day FedEx express shipping and only lost 1. Same day air is always better but thats not always an option.

Would a 2ft long, 1ft wide, 1.5 ft tall be able to house a couple?

Maybe temporarily nut I think they'll need a little more space than that because altolamps are fairly territorial. For what it's worth razzo is the altolamp master and would be the best person to ask.
