Hello All,

I have a fairly new 125 g setup with 5 kitumba fry and 2 Neo brachardi fry. They have been in the tank for two weeks now with no problems. I have tried adding some calvus and comps twice(7 and then 2) and on both occasions they died within 12 hours. They start out fine and then several hours later began to breath extremely heavy, sink to the bottom sit for a while, and then die. Has anyone experienced this before or any suggestions. My water parameters are fine. Amon-0, Nitrite-0, Nitrates 10-20, pH-8.2, Temp -78, and water is hard. I perform 10-25% water changes weekly, but atleast 2 days before adding new fish. I ve consulted with some well experienced Alto keepers on here and they gave me some good advice. just wondering if anyone else has experienced this as these are my fav. fish next to Cyphos. :(

How hard is your water compared to what the fish came out of? Do you add any buffers or Salts?

On both occasions I asked all the parameters and all i got is the ph and that the water is hard. With the first set they came from a 8.2 to 8.6. the second set came from 8.0 to 8.2. the neo brichardi came from 7.0 and they acclimated fine and the kits came from 8.6 and they acclimated fine. I know Altos are sensitive so i dripped and added small amounts of water for three to four hours. As far as the hardness im not sure where they came from, but i use the Seachem Tang. Salt for ph and it puts my hardness where it needs to be as the water here is already fairly hard.

Maybe I need to upgrade my hardness test to one that gives numerical values. I have been using the strips that show colors. My water reads "hard" with the next highest value being "very hard." I do use the drop test for amon, nitrate, and ph.

Sounds like it should be OK ....I have no idea what could be the culprit....let us know if you find what is going on. What is your water source?

In addition to our private messages, thought I'd add a couple more things after seeing this post.

I would get the API liquid test kits for hardness they are pretty good.

Tangs can handle a pH increase but can struggle with a drop. Some worse than others. I use the Seachem Tang buffer in my reservoir tank. My problems went away once I started using a reservoir tank for my water changes with pH buffering.

The problems you stated really sound like something in the water however we just don't know what. The reservoir tank system we talked about in PM, should take your water provider out of the equation (if these use too much chlormine one day).

Hope that helps,
Russ

Mine have always seemed bullet proof. Razzo is on the right track I think. I've always been obsessive about keeping my water exactly the same with only very slow changes for new fish. I took a week to change .6 ph when my calvus arrived. Good luck.

Once you get things stabilized, you should be OK with your water changes. Using the reservoir system, I can change 50% every other day (if I wanted) and the altos don't miss a beat.
