Hey guys,

I just received a shipment of 15 Wild Caught Tropheus Ikola from Greg @ Little Africa Aquatics. The fish came in looking very nice with minimal stress showing in their color. I'm super pumped to finally get some as I've been researching these guys for about 2 months now. :bananna

I have them in the 55 gallon I've been re-sealing and making a stand for. The stand is still being worked on, so I have the tank on a temporary stand for now. I'll try to get some pics posted on here soon.

Marc

Thanks guys! You'll be the first to know David! lol.

Unfortunately I lost 4 of them. I wanted to make them less stressed and decided to cover their tank up for one night...well that was a really stupid mistake. One jumped out and got caught on the top of the lid, and 3 died in the tank....If I didn't have it covered I would have noticed them struggling. Not sure why they died as their water was literally perfect...I'm thinking a ph difference from the water they came from.

Oh well...11 are doing well. I'll order some more to add to the group soon. This is my first time keeping tropheus and from what I've heard about people keeping them for the first time, I'm lucky to have that many left.

They're amazing fish to watch, very active. They also all swim right over to whatever part of the tank I'm at, very social fish. And they love to eat, lol.

I hope so too! Thanks me. They're still eating well and I'm keeping their water immaculate. Hopefully I won't lose any more.

Quick update. The Ikola are doing very well. I have approx. 14 times turnover in the tank and put in a powerhead to make a current in the tank. This seemed to really cut down on aggression. Apparently the black species (which Ikola are) of Tropheus are the most aggressive.

I'm doing plenty of water changes and keeping their water immaculate. I have 9 more coming soon, so I'll have a total of 20 Ikola when I get them in.

Here are a couple pics. They're hard to snap a good pic of because they move so much.

I bought some fish from a local guy here in town. He had always wanted Tropheus. He bought a large group 35 or so. Had them in a 265 gallon tank. He said it was like all of the sudden he had a bunch of little ones. I understand they will not eat their young. None of the Tropheus in the tank will. So he raised them up and sold a bunch. He said he loved raising them. He had heard how hard they were to raise let alone breed. So he was up for the challenge. Worked out for him!! Good luck to you Marc you appear to be on the right course. :bravo

It's cool that they won't eat the fry...makes it very convenient. I've heard however, that the fry are impossible to catch once they're free swimming, lol. Hopefully I'll find out very soon.
