2 of my Congo Calvus have turned utterly black over night. I have no idea why the others all look the same as ever...I do suspect that these are both male.Any ideas?

my guess would be these males are starting to get ready to breed pair up or just having some dominance war

Today everyone is normal color ,... but there is a lot of flaring fins and pushing between the two color changers. If they do not "work" it out I'll move one top another tank for a bit, but no damage yet.

glad to hear it. sounds like you might have a couple males competing for the girls. i'm sure they'll work it out.

It is just weird how fast they changed and changed back....and so utterly BLACK. No luck reaching Russ....hope he is fishing. :D The "Black" fish have moved to opposite ends of the tank and stare each other down.

How big of a tank are they in?

I hope they start spawning for you soon.

These are currently in a 150 with a bunch of cyps and some goldhead comps.

That tank is differently big enough, maybe to big to breed them. When I use to breed comps I used a 55 or a custom 33 tank to breed them in. Good luck with them. Keep use updated, I would love to find out how well they breed.

Hey guys, sorry I have been away. My job is super busy in summer and then add in all the outdoor activities and I don't get on fish sites very often. Yes, mine (males and females) can turn almost Inkfin black. Usually competition is involved. I really like it when they turn black (love it).

Here's an older picture of the father of your fry in what I call Inkfin mode

Middle mode with some nice contrast (female left)

He can turn on the yellow trait from the forehead up into the dorsal fin and shoulders sometimes
