Earlier in the week, I was performing some routine maintenance on several fry tanks and a reoccurring thought came to me once again, “I don’t want to do this anymore.” This time, that thought was followed by a new one, “I’m done.” That thought echoed in my mind for a few minutes and then I thought on the reality of it and then a flood of encouragement rushed through me and I got excited – I’m done! I am really done!! I decided right then and there that I was truly going to be done – it was a refreshing moment.

I am currently maintaining eight tanks and four of which are fry tanks which require extra maintenance. I have not been enjoying my fish for a long time. I don’t want to do this anymore. I am not going to get out of the hobby completely; rather, just scale it back to a level that I can enjoy again. I don’t want to be a breeder anymore: I have been cutting down on saving fry for a while and I am no longer going to save any fry (at all). I only want to have two tanks: a 180 frontosa Mikula tank and a 72 gallon bow front Tang community tank.

So, here is my plan,… by the last Saturday in April, I only want two have two tanks running (may have to have a third fry tank till I clear out the last of my fry). The last Saturday in April is the “Trout Opener” in Michigan. I have several spring fed trout streams somewhat close to home that I want to spend more time wading in them this year. Also, I plan to do more things with my kids. No more hours and hours of weekly maintenance. Few pics from my favorite trout stream…

Some really nice brown trout too

I get an occasional steelhead in my creek

Just wanted to get that off my chest :)

Take care,
Russ

Hey Ian,

I do have a group of fry growing out that will be my last. I have some Muzi gold head comps and some bcwp calvus that will be ready to ship this summer.

I plan to keep my wild Calvus BCWP
My wild Muzi gold comps are spoken for already.
I plan on having a "fire sale" on my wild kilesa and F1 kilesa fry.
Fire sale on my F1 callochromis fry too.

I'll probably give away a couple 55 gallon tanks with all the specialties needed to some of my Sunday School kids. Probably set them up with some fish too.

Thanks,
Russ

I was thinking almost the same-thing yesterday. We spent all day tearing down racks sanding the rust off, and repainting them. We started at 9:00am and finish at 10:00pm. Allen brought his kids by and helped. They saved my ass. Now that it's done I feel better about things.
Taking care of fish is a big deal, and it take time away from the family. Have fun with the family and don't be afraid to drop by a visit us.

Automatic water changers.
Flip a switch and they drain.
Flip another switch and they fill.

Or do an automatic drip.

Cuts back on a ton of time.

Thanks guys :D

I'll be around, I am just scaling back a bit. Gonna keep my favorite species and enjoy photographing them.

Not gonna worry about fry.

I am looking forward to giving my wild calvus black congo white pearl a show tank vs the dull, boring, scratched up breeder tank I have had them in. They are a unique & special group with that yellow/gold trait on the forehead that spreads into the dorsal fin. I want to put them in the 72 gallon bow front tank, add a few tankmates (yet to be determined), and take some photos that will rock the hobby

I love photography too and I am investing in some pro gear and plan to continue to grow and learn and hopefully capture to neat images.

That's the plan anyways.

For the next couple months, this will be the plan....

Thanks,
Russ

I sympathise with you. I felt the same way after selling off my WC Kilesa and WC Cyps. I had two empty 6 footers and I was thinking, enough, take a break, I'm sick of changing water. Then I bought 2 new WC frontosa colonies! They are not breeding as yet though so it kind of is a break, or will be once I've sold off all my kilesa, cyp and calvus fry.
Catch many trout and enjoy your time with the family - they will be adults before you know it. You can keep fish when they have left home!

Slight change in plans - have not been doing much fishing but still have been on the water  Plan to take in the fireworks in St. Joseph, MI tonight from the Lake Michigan. Have never watched fireworks from a boat before.

Few pics from some boating on Lake Michigan a few weeks ago.

Razzo:

Excellent decision man! 8 months ago I faced the same situation. I had a 300 gallon peacock show tank along with 22 aditional 10 to 55 gallon tanks. Those tanks were for breding good quality peacocks and raising fry. The work was so much that I started to not enjoy the hobby. Then I decided to sell all the peacocks and all the tanks, except the 300 gallon. That change was the main reason that I bought frontosa mobas. Now I have only one tank, and I can enjoy the hobby and the fish better. Plus as you, I like fishing a lot, so now I have more time for fishing.

Here are some photos of my favorite hobby:
