how often do altos spawn? are they seasonal or multiple times a year?

Once a group starts spawning, it seems as if they spawn all the time. I am not sure how often but I do know it is multiple times per year.

One of my first Altolamprologus calvus (black congo white pearl) fry has recently graduated to his intended purpose: community tank with frontosa. I really love the bcwp. I recently picked up a large, regular, black calvus and there is a big difference in the spots. BCWP have the largest pearls of any calvus and they are irregular. Really like them.

In any event, this boy is about 3.5"

Update: I still have those two F1 Altolamprologus calvus Black Congo White Pearl juvies that I saved from one of my first batches of fry. They are about 3.5 to 4" (I wonder at what point you stop calling them juvies. They have graduated to the frontosa tank :)

Here's a couple pics....

As mentioned above, this guy was one of the first batches of F1 Altolamprologus calvus (Black Congo White Pearl) that my wild group ever produced. He is a few years old by now.

And here is the latest generation of F1 Altolamp fry in the fish room. This is a 55 gallon tank and I have been using it to grow out the latest F1 batches of A. calvus BCWP fry and F1 A. compressiceps Muzi gold head fry. There was 70 more in there a few weeks ago that I shipped a southern state. My best guess, they are approx. ¾” to 1”

about how long after they hatch does it take to grow them to that size? that tank full of altos must be a lot of fun to watch.

I had a group of Muzi fry that reached 0.75" in four months (I think??? have to look back at my notes) which is exceptionally fast. That is power feeding and water changes every other day. My guess is approx. 8 months for them to get approx. 1.25"

Yes, always a blessing seeing life develop :D

Different people have different opinions on that subject. I am one that have mixed them many times and have really enjoyed how well the compliment each other. I have sold the combination to many people and all of them have had positive experiences.

Here are your two biggest issues:
1) They are in the same genus so the possibility of hybridization is a possibility. Altolamp hybridization is frowned upon in our hobby and I totally agree. In my experiences, as long as you have more than one of each species they totally ignore each other even when the other species is spawning. If you did end up with some hybrid fry, just leave them in the tank and the adults will take care of that problem.

2) You will need more than one of each otherwise you will see some aggression across species (usually not fatal).

Positives for me:
1) They both look really cool and different.
2) They have very different personalities and really compliment each other.

I currently have three tanks with both species in it and all are doing very well.

Hope that helps.
