I replied to your thread on cyphos too...but might as well say the same thing here, lol...

"Depends on aggression really...but I would say 7-9 SHOULD work. I'm currently housing 11 very large Mpimbwe in a 6 footer due to an issue with my 7 foot tank. It's working so far. Every colony is different though. One thing that will make a big difference is how many males you have. One alpha male would be ideal IF you're looking to fit as many as possible in there. A Beta presents a whole different scenario."

Haha, I'm everywhere...when they reach around 4 to 4 1/2 inches, they can be sexed. We can help you vent them with good, clear pics.

+1 on 6 to 8 mature gibberosa in a 6-foot tank. A lot will depend on the spirit of the group. Most cases a 6-foot tank will work fine. I had problems with a group of 7 Kapampa in a 6-foot 140 gallon tank that only got better when I put that same group in an 8-foot tank. All problems were immediately solved by the two extra feet.

If your starting with fry? You may want a few more to start with.

Thanks Razzo. I have 6 x 3" Mpimbwe. I am not setting out to breed them, I am just hoping that they all grow up and get along.I understand that a time will come when they may want to breed. I will have to sell males and get different ones if that happens.

Sounds like a good plan. You can even add some more at this stage of the game (I actually would recommend that). I'd be tempted to double what you have and see how things go as they get bigger. Sometimes #s are your friend with regards to aggression. You will have the flexibility to reduce #s later (if needed). You may end up discovering the group will be happy with ten members of the community. I'd add at least four more (at least 1.5").

Getting new blood (males) later shouldn't be a problem with Mpimbwe. You'll probably find out that you don't want to get rid of your alpha as you'll be attached. I don't even know that new blood will even be needed. Assuming your Pims are F1, any resulting fry would be F2 (aka: Tank Raised). Your fry customers for TR fry would most likely be local pet shops and there shouldn't be any genetic issues/degradation from F1 siblings breeding.

Oh.O.K. Thanks for that info. I was sure that I would have to get rid of all the males if they showed signs of breeding. As you said, it would be hard to get rid of males.Everyone on here seems to get very fond of theirs and I am sure I would be the same. The 6 I have are f1. What would happen if I end up with more of them turning out to be males than females? Would that be a problem? Unfortunately, I do not have the funds to buy any more. Thanks Razzo.

As with any group of fronts, you will have to watch the tankmate chemistry. With semi aggressive African Tangs, three or males of equal size usually works and is entertaining to watch.

Sometimes the more the merrier.

You are already committed, you'll just have to wait and see.
