I've played around with the lighting on my 8' for years and have finally recently settled on what I prefer which consists of a 50" Arcadia marine white with a 30" marine blue behind it. I found that more light didn't equal better colours. I was running two 40" tubes at the back, the 50" in front and a blue in the middle and it completely washed the colours out. Think it was the light reflecting off the white substrate. With what I'm running now you get a nice bright section in the middle of the tank and dark corners either side so its a nice contrast and the fish colours look great. I think the dimmer lighting is more natural for the fish as well as they come from deep waters.
