I am new to Fronts (and this forum), and I do have experience with Central and South American cichlids. I was out of the hobby for a while, but now that money and space isn't a huge issue, I would like to pick up where I left off...with baby steps of course... :)

I want to start with a 75 gallon aquarium and my main goal is to have 4-5 fronts...what is the maximum size 4-5 frontosa can reach before they outgrow a 75 gallon tank??? I don't plan on breeding...of course I say that until I have a bigger tank and 2 to work with. I just want the colony feel.

If for some reason I do not upgrade from a 75g can I manage more than one adult frontosa? If only one how many other tangs can I use as tank mates that will still give that colony feel? (cyps, julies and/or comps?)

All opinions would be greatly appreciated...thanks

Hi.
I've sGibberosa in 105gal(real water=84gal+stones 100lbs+coral sand 40lbs) 365days.From 1.5i they grow up till 4i-5i(10cm-13cm).
Seems to me my fish in 100gal glass tank easy can live for a long time.Aprox. in 2years my fish will reach ~5.5i-7i....
So if you've 75gal - I suppose it will be unough for 4-5fish in size till 5-6i...and its for 12-18month old individs.
Just must change water. After 365days I count my waterchanges and get 85% monthly.
Good luck.

welcome to the forum. if you start with 1" fry you will be fine for 6 or 8 months but the sooner you can get a 6 foot or larger tank the better. odds are you will not be able to get away with a 4 footer in the long run. the big problems are aggression and that fronts can spook easily and run into the glass and possibly injure themselves. regular water changes are a must to keep you fish healthy. i do about 30-40% a week. also you should provide a sinking pellet for fronts instead of the floaters for CAs and SAs, to avoid them gulping air and coming down with a case of float. what variant are you planning on getting?

Thanks for the replies...I may go ahead and get a 6' tank (125-135g) instead...the hard part is convincing the wife that this is a good investment!

As far as what variant I'm going for...I obviously would love to get my hands on Zaire Blue Mobas, but from what I have seen, availability is far and few between, and most are wild caught and pretty expensive...I want fish with obvious blue coloration.
I have read that Kigomas have more yellows than blues, is this true???

I would be happy with Burundis, Mpimbwe, Bulu Point Frontosa(???)
Really any variant I would be happy with...but I want dominant blue variants...
What are your thoughts...Is there an easier frontosa variety that is good for beginners? Is there other variants that are similar to Zaire Blue's appearance???

if you want lots of blue, Zaire variants and Mpimbwe will be your best bet. Kigoma do have a lot of yellow in their fins, but that's part of the appeal for some people.......that and the 7th stripe. some burundi will have nice blues but most have fins that are closer to white in color so you may want to pass on them unless you find some great specimens.
