Im curious to know how some of you run your filtration. Its about time I change the media in my canister filters and I would like to mix it up a bit. I have an eheim pro 2 and a pro 3. The biomix they recommend using is like $15 a box and not even enough to fill one tray, I have a total of 5 trays that need media so I only run the eheim pro2 on my 72 bowfront tank. I already buy bulk mesh filter and carbon mesh and cut my own pads to fit, but I want to know what else I can use instead of the expensive media and charcoal they sell. I have heard crushed coral or argonite from a friend. I have also been told to put a foam head over the filter intake to pick up less debris. I am also considering putting in a power head of some sort to increase circulation etc. Please give me some input.

I have: 72 gal bowfront tank, all tang fish, running eheim pro2 on it. no heater 9 months a year, and almost no additives as Las Vegas water is almost perfect for cichlids and its almost too warm without a heater.

thanks guys, James

ps. If anyone else is in Vegas, lets get a beer.

if u need to replace your fine filter pad and carbon i'd say do it but your course filter pad can be rinsed in a bucket of aquarium water and reused nearly forever. the same can be said for your bio beads and bio rings. no need to throw them out but if you want to add more go for it. as for other media to use i've been thinking of trying some seachem matrix. $15 for 2L from kens. says it holds a ton of bio bacteria but maybe someone else can tell us both if it's any good. i've heard of people using lava rock and holy rock in their filters as cheap media. crushed coral is supposed to be ok but it will raise your PH. my eheim is missing the strainer so i do use the foam block over the intake to avoid gravel being sucked up into it and ruining the motor. does help keep large debris out too.

Show me a cichlid that isn't hungry, and I'll show you a cichlid that isn't healthy.
