I'm new to sponge type filters. I've had the sponges sitting in my FX5 for 2 weeks so they should be seeded and ready to go.....how much air do I need to run through them? I cannot see the flow so how do you judge?

it really depends on what size tank you are putting them in. air pumps are rated for the depth of a tank. so if u are using a small pump on your 150 you may not even see any air flow. also if u r running more than one sponge off of a single pump u will probably need to pick up a gang valve so you can balance how much air goes to each sponge. it also helps if you can place your pump on a shelf above the water level of your tank. hope this helps.

this is in a 25 gallon fry tub...the sponges are 4" in diameter and 3" tall.

so i'm assuming you have already hooked them up and are not getting any air flow? if this is the case i would double check and make sure your check valves are installed the right way (i have screwed that up more than once myself) and your gang valve doesn't still have the little piece of plastic that blocks the hole for the air line has been removed (i think the just put it there for shipping). also depending on your pump and gang valve there may be excess ports to plug in more air lines that you may have to block. if your pump didn't come with plugs you can tie a small piece of air tube in a knot instead.

I think I got it worked out....I think I had too much air going and was pressurizing the inside of the filter......I cut down to a "medium" amount of bubbles coming out and now wayter is going through the sponge. 8)
