Hey,

So I'm thinking about buying some Poret foam to use as replacements for my cartridges in my emperor 400 and my cascade 300's. I was looking at swiss twopicals and saw that the most cost efficient sheet is the 1" thick blue 30 ppi foam. That seems like a good thickness for a hob filter. Any thoughts on this size foam or is there a better size to use? I'm hoping this foam will save me a lot of money in the long run.

Marc

Poret is supposed to be very good stuff. Im just not sure of if its worth the extra cost or not.
I just use whatever replacement foam I can find on ebay for by aquaclears, usually pretty cheap and they last forever.
For canisters, i bought a bunch of pads for a floor waxer/buffer, saved a ton of money.

Hey tr6, thanks for the reply. what kind of foam do you look for on ebay?

For the 1" blue 30 ppi foam, I can get two 19" by 19" sheets for $38 after shipping...that would be more than enough to replace all my cartridges, and I'm sure it would save me lots of money over the cartridge costs, however, if I can get a cheaper foam that would perform as well, I would go with that. Any links for for high quality good priced foam?

Thanks!

I think i got 12 generic aquaclear 500 blocks for like 18.99, where the real aquaclear blocks are about $7 each.
the buffer/wax pad which was about 2 feet across was like 4.99.
just do an ebay search.

when i did research for the poret it was a bit more than you are paying, so for that price i'd go ahead and use it.
10 bucks more for something that lasts for years, is no big deal.

So I bought the poret foam awhile back, and I love it! It does an amazing job of flitering my tanks, and is a very strong foam. It was definitely worth the money. No more expensive cartridges for me :D

Marc where did you buy the foam from? I have been thinking about doing the same thing. Cartridges are killing me with the costs. I need to ask Big Jim what he does as I know he has said he runs HOB filters in all of his tanks. The cost to replace cartridges for him must be out of this world.

I ran out of my HOB filters instead of buying more I bought Poret foam. Cut to fit and I am hooked. Marc is right this is good stuff. I put a 1 inch 30 ppi in my sump on the drip tray above the bio-balls. I run several Terta EX70 HOB filters. I bought a 19.5 X19.5 sheet of 1 inch 30 ppi and cut 4.5 X 6.5 squares I was able to get 9 per sheet. They are the right fit for my EX70 frames and I am done buying replacement cartridges. I also bought a 4 x 4 20 ppi foam block that I am going to use to replace the foam block in my corner over flows. I am hoping for may years of service out of this foam. Go on Swiss Tropicals web site he has a great questions asked about their product section. I would say if you use any kind of a HOB filter you really need to check this out as a replace for the cartridges.

Jim like me uses Aquaclear HOBs, they don't use cartridges, so nothing else to buy.

The aquaclear foam lasts at least 5 years, so no real expense with Aquaclears vs. other brands of HOB's that use cartridges.
Aquaclears are the best on the market.

AC's really take a lot of the expense out of fish keeping..........especially if you have a lot of tanks. they also take a lot of the headache out of maintenance. i can be forgetful at the store and replacement cartrages used to be the #1 thing that would slip my mind. i do my water changes at night (cause water is cheaper after 9pm in spokane) and i can't even count how many times i've topped off my tanks and was about to plug everything back in and realized i had forgotten to get new filter cartrages again...........and and the pet stores are all closed! on top of all of that they are the best filters i've used. no other filters i've used so far have kept my tanks cleaner.
