I've gone over to using Rena Stealth heaters, 2 x 300w in my 220g Front tank and various smaller wattage ones in my 70g, 30g etc. I've used the adaptors that utilise the heater as the filter intake but I don't like them, the adaptor doesn't form an airtight seal, so if you leave the filter running during water changes ( as I like to do ) air can be drawn in when the water level reaches below the top of the heater.

guess I should have searched the forum before I started and identical thread. Very good information here. Thank you all.

Bigern, you mention smaller heaters are a safer option... is it as easy as 3 x 100's to replace a 300wat heater?

I use when necesary, THEO Heather from Hydor, after use so many brands (Jäger, ebo-jäger, SERA, visit therm, therma sure, rena) and lots more of generic ones from asia, this italian one works better IMO, very accurate and the best is that the tube is not broken whe you put back it to the water and stills hot... also resist some grade of impacts...

very good but not cheap... but it worth

regards

I still have a 250w green Ebo jager from 24 years ago that I use in a 55 gallon Tanganyikan community tank. I've heard some bad stories about Ebos since Eheim bought them, but I still use them. On big tanks, I normally run 2 under wattage Ebos using a controller. The controller is more reliable than the heater's built in thermostat. Also, in the event of one of the heaters going out, the other heater is a backup. A bit expensive and redundant, but it's good insurance.

I bought a 300w Eheim trutemp jager thinking it would be reliable etc...after 20 attempts and live support from Eheim it would not change the water's temp from 80F. Returned it for an Aqueon Pro 250w and this heater is amazing. Pretty much plug n play unlike that 2 hard dial dinosaur from Eheim. It's also 4" smaller & no glass parts either...what a no brainer.

Good to hear that you like the aqueon heater. Since creating this topic in 2008, i have discontinued all aqueon products. 100w heaters aqueon brand are responsible for overheating 7 of my breeder tanks to the point of death to all. So i pulled all heaters from my tanks and just started heating the whole building in the winter. turns out it was the cheaper option.

Hi there, sad to hear about that. I had read a lot of negative reviews on the Aqueons, but so much positive ones on the Aqueon Pros. They are built like a billy club. That is a nightmare though, coming home after work and everything dead :(.
