Hi guys

I recently had a big fight in my Samazi tank and I have since removed one male. I have a 8 foot by 2 by 2 foot tank and wanted to divide the tank in 2 halves to house 1 male and 2 females on either side. I want to use egg crate to separate the tank and use one filtration system. Do you think this set up can work well ? I would also like for them to breed. Will this effect the breeding ?

thanks guys

48" tank is not ideal for fronts nor is a trio. You may have more aggression problems (male to female). They need all that 96" and a harem (i.e. four in your case).

Tell me about this fight - did you break it up before they decided a winner? The reason I ask, if you let them decide who the boss is and the subdominant fish starts to submit, sometimes the alpha will back off and only chase once in a while as a reminder of who the boss is. Most cypho owners intervene before they really need to.

I removed the male as his lip was torn off however he was still chasing the other male. I removed him to treat, didn't want infection to set it. His lip is still healing now and isn't red anymore. the lip is still in its growing phase so I wont be adding him soon. I feel bad to keep him in the small holding tank his in now.

Ok, so, the fight or more appropriately, the war,...wasn't done. That's unfortunate. It would have been done the next morning. Your aggressor, the one with the torn lip would have lost the war the next morning and started submitting. They would have one brief skirmish the next morning and your aggressor would have discovered his wounds didn't heal over night while the betas did and he would throw up the white flag and the tank would most likely started to return to a more normal state where everyone submits to the alpha and the alpha is happy only exerts enough force needed to maintain the ne status quo.

I believe, it's just my unscientific opinion, that had your new alpha won the role of alpha (which he hasn't) your chances of successful spawning would have dramatically increased. It is what it is now :-)

Rehome the looser and pick up two new trios of smalls. Then you'll have eight females, one alpha and two smaller subdominant males all in the 240. That will be perfect for that tank.

Good luck,
Russ

Its not that easy to get wild caught here in South Africa. Its even difficult to get F1's. I will have to maybe take both out and reset the rocks and stuff and hopefully they can settle the battle. Thanks for your help Russ

Your welcome. That's a good plan. Let the looser completely heal and then let them go at it again. It's tough to watch, I've been in our shoes.
