I've had a mixture of standard gravel substrate and crushed coral for many years. Fronts have always done fine. However, I'd like to move to a black substrate. Can I remove/add new substrate with Fronts in tank? I have a 110 gal with HOB bio-wheel and several canisters with bio-media. Thoughts?

Because you say "many years" I would not risk moving it all at once do to trapped gasses and ammonia among other nasties. Try moving out a few lbs of substrate a day each time vacuuming the area as you do it until you have it all removed. Then you can add your new substrate safely.

I removed my substrate in thirds over the course of 6 weeks. Just used my gravel syphon into buckets outside. Then replaced it over 3 water changes over a period of three weeks.
No fish harmed over the 3 months
